TheKeyMachine is a genuinely good free, open-source Maya toolset — if it does what you need, use it. This page is an honest look at what AnimKit adds on top, and when the free option is all you need.
Update, September 2026. TheKeyMachine is no longer in active development. The notice on the project's GitHub says there will be no further updates, bug fixes or new features, and that thekeymachine.xyz shuts down around mid-September 2026. The source stays on GitHub under GPL-3.0, so the tools keep working and anyone can fork them — but the documented support stops at Maya 2025, and downloads should come from the repository rather than the site. That version cap, not any missing feature, is what decides this comparison for anyone already on Maya 2026.

Seriously — a free tool that does the job is a great deal, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What changed in 2026 isn't the quality of the tools; it's that nobody is maintaining them, so weigh it as a fixed thing you adopt rather than something that will keep up with Maya.
