Most people trying to hit a 100KB limit reach straight for the quality slider, drag it down until the number finally drops, and end up with a blurry, blocky mess. There is a better order of operations, and it starts somewhere else entirely: the dimensions.
A photo from a modern phone is often around 4,000 pixels wide. If the form you are uploading to displays it at 600 pixels, you are carrying far more pixel data than anyone will ever see. Shrink the dimensions first and the file size falls dramatically before you touch quality at all.
Resize or compress β which one actually does the work?
The two words get used interchangeably, but they change different things:
- Resizing changes the pixel dimensions (4,000 Γ 3,000 β 1,000 Γ 750). Fewer pixels means a smaller file, and the pixels that remain keep their detail.
- Compressing keeps the dimensions and throws away visual information to shrink the file. Push it too far and you see blur, blockiness, and halos around edges.
For a hard target like 100KB, resizing does the heavy lifting and compression does the fine-tuning. Doing it the other way around is what produces those ruined images.
The right order, in three steps
