A friend with an iPhone sends you holiday photos. On your Android phone or Windows laptop, half of them refuse to open — the file ends in .HEIC and nothing will touch it. Upload it to a form and you get "unsupported file type".
Nothing is broken. You have simply received a format that Apple adopted as its default and that much of the rest of the world still does not handle.
What HEIC actually is
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It stores the same photo in roughly half the space of an equivalent JPEG at comparable quality, which is why Apple switched: more photos in the same storage, smaller iCloud backups.
Technically it is a strong format. Practically it has one enormous weakness: support. JPEG opens everywhere — every browser, every form, every operating system, every ten-year-old device. HEIC opens on Apple devices and in newer software that has explicitly added it. Web upload forms, in particular, frequently reject it.
That gap is why the conversion exists.
Converting HEIC to JPG
The straightforward route is a converter that runs in your browser:
- Open the image format converter.
- Drop in the HEIC file (or several — batch conversion saves a lot of time when someone has shared a whole album).
- Choose JPG as the output and download.
Everything happens on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server. That is worth caring about here specifically, because HEIC files come out of phone cameras, and phone camera photos routinely include location data, timestamps, and people who did not agree to be uploaded anywhere.

Stop your iPhone creating them in the first place
If the files are coming from your own iPhone, you can change the source instead of converting forever. In iOS, under the Camera settings, the format option offers "High Efficiency" (HEIC) or "Most Compatible" (JPEG). Choosing Most Compatible means the camera captures JPEG from then on.
The trade is real: JPEG files are meaningfully larger, so you will use more storage. If you mostly share photos with people on other platforms, that is usually worth it. If you live entirely in Apple's ecosystem and just occasionally need to send one out, keep HEIC and convert as needed.
There is also a middle path: iPhones generally convert automatically to JPEG when you share via certain routes, but not all of them — which is exactly why the file sometimes arrives as HEIC and sometimes does not, and why it feels unpredictable.
Will converting lose quality?
Slightly, and it is worth being precise about why. Both HEIC and JPEG are lossy formats, so a conversion re-encodes an already-compressed image. In practice, converting at a high quality setting produces a result that is visually indistinguishable for normal viewing and printing.
What you should avoid is converting repeatedly — HEIC to JPG to WebP and back. Each pass discards a little more. Convert once from the original, and keep the original if it has any archival value.
