Android video corrupted? Repair it on the phone

The phone shut down mid-recording, the camera app crashed, or the storage filled up, and the video now shows a broken thumbnail or "Can't play video". Android camera apps write the index of an MP4 when you press stop. A recording that never got its stop is missing that index, and the gallery can't play it even though the footage is in the file.

Repair it on the phone

The Video Repair app for Android looks for the videos on the phone that won't play, so you don't have to dig through folders. It checks the file, repairs it and plays you the result for free; you pay only to save the repaired video. Get it from Google Play below.

Prefer a computer? Copy the video over a cable and open it in the checker on this page. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing.

Do you need a second video?

Usually not. Most broken phone videos repair from the file alone, because the phone's video stream repeats its own settings. When the sound's settings can't be proven, the app asks for a clip from the same phone, recorded with the same camera app at the same resolution and frame rate. It reads that clip's settings and copies no picture or sound from it.

What other Android repair apps ask for

MP4Fix (Smamolot)1M+3.9Yes, its listing says it needs "another valid video recorded on the same Android phone"

MP4Fix has far more users than we do, and like us it lets you watch the repaired video free before paying. Where Video Repair differs: it repairs many videos without a second clip, and the same engine runs on Windows and in any browser, for videos you have already moved off the phone.

Phones we've tested

A Samsung Galaxy A56 recording, with its index removed, came back with all 352 pictures and all 277 sound frames identical to the original, and with no second clip. Other Android phones record the same kind of MP4, H.264 or H.265 video with AAC sound. We haven't tested each brand, and the free check is the test for yours.

How the app got here

  • 24 August 2026: version 1.0.0 on Google Play.
  • 14 September (1.0.17): the sample-clip step rebuilt after a week of field data showed people picking the wrong clip.
  • 19 September (1.0.21): files whose index is partly there keep what they have.
  • October: GoPro, DJI and dash-cam layouts; the engine moves into the browser and onto Windows.
  • 29 and 30 October: more videos repaired with no second clip.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The video is in Google Photos backup. Is the copy there fine?

A broken video usually backs up broken, or not at all. If it plays in Google Photos on another device, download that copy and you don't need a repair.

Does the repair need the internet?

No. The app repairs on the phone, and the browser checker reads the file on your computer.

Does it lower the quality?

No. It rebuilds the index around the original frames and re-encodes nothing.
