Why 512 x 512 is the size that matters
Google Play asks for a 512 x 512 px hi-res icon on every store listing. It is the artwork the Play Store scales down for search results and your store page, so starting from a sharp, correctly sized square keeps the icon crisp wherever the store shows it. The spec is strict: a 32-bit PNG, exactly 512x512, with a file size up to 1024 KB. Getting the dimensions right before you upload to Play Console avoids the rejection you get from an off-size or non-square image.
Because 512x512 is a 1:1 square, the resize mode you choose shapes the result. Crop-to-fit is best when your source is rectangular and you want the icon to fill the whole frame edge to edge — it trims the longer side and centers the subject. Fit-inside is the safe choice when you cannot afford to lose any of the artwork, such as a logo with tight margins; pair it with a solid background fill so the transparent or empty space reads as an intentional, square icon rather than awkward letterboxing. Stretch is available too, but avoid it for icons since it distorts a non-square source.
