When Stellar or Repairit is the better pick
If your video is MKV, WMV, MTS, FLV or a cinema-camera format such as BRAW or R3D, Video Repair can't open it yet, and Stellar or Repairit can. The same goes for a Mac program: Stellar and Repairit install on a Mac, and on a Mac you use our checker in the browser. Stellar's free preview also covers more of the video, up to 20 % of its size, against our 5 seconds.
When Video Repair is the better pick
- Your file is an MP4, MOV or AVI. These are what phones, GoPro and DJI cameras and most dash cams record, and what the engine was built and tested on.
- You'd rather not install anything. The checker runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Windows or a Mac, and reads the file from your own disk. Nothing is uploaded.
- You have no sample file. Many recordings carry their own settings, and the checker repairs them with the broken file alone. It asks for a clip only when it can't prove them. See repairing without a reference file.
- You need one video back, once. $4.99 for that video online, or $3.99 in the Windows program, against $49.99 for Stellar's Standard edition.
- The video is on your phone. The Video Repair app for Android repairs it there.
What the repair does to your video
Video Repair rebuilds the index around the camera's own frames and re-encodes nothing, so the saved file holds the original pictures and sound. We test this frame by frame: we remove the index from a real recording, repair it, and compare every frame with the original. Recordings from GoPro HERO5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, a DJI Avata, 70mai and Tesla dash cams and a Samsung Galaxy A56 came back identical.
What people say after a repair
These are public Google Play reviews of the Video Repair app for Android, which uses the same engine as the checker on this page. The German one is our translation.
"Only app that actually works and it's incredibly fast as well! Totally worth paying for the premium, and it's surprisingly cheap." (Google Play review, October 2026)
"Works great. €5 once for an unlock, with a preview first. Very happy, and it's clearly cheaper and simpler than all the other alternatives." (Google Play review in German, September 2026; the app's prices have changed since)
"recovered a video from a place I'll never visit again. it was 1 hour long going on to my YouTube channel. it was worth every bit of the $3.99." (John C., Google Play review, October 2026)
Some reviews are one star. In October a reviewer wrote, in Spanish, that the app asks you to pay to keep the repaired video. That's true: checking, repairing and watching the preview are free, and saving the full video is paid.
How the engine got here
- 24 August 2026: Video Repair 1.0.0 for Android on Google Play.
- 1 September (app 1.0.3): a damaged sample clip no longer stops the repair.
- 9 October: GoPro sound. HERO5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and MAX recordings return every picture and sound frame; before, a HERO5 file got 1 sound frame of 1,620 back.
- 10 October: a DJI Avata 4K60 file went from 5 pictures of 364 to all 364.
- 12 October: Video Repair Online runs the same engine in the browser and saves the same file, byte for byte, as the app.
- 29 and 30 October: repairs with no sample clip when the recording proves its own settings, and MP3 sound in dash-cam MP4 files.
Try it on your file
- Open the broken video in the checker at the top of this page.
- The free check says whether the footage is there and how much of it can be rebuilt.
- Watch the 5-second preview of your own video.
- Download the full video with a paid plan, or in the Windows program. If the repaired video doesn't play, you get a refund.
