Action camera video corrupted? Repair the MP4

Action cameras live on small batteries and cheap cards, so cut-off clips are common: the battery dies on a long ride, the camera overheats and shuts down, or a bump knocks the card loose. Akaso, RunCam, SJCAM, Insta360 Go and similar cameras record MP4 with H.264 or H.265, and a clip cut off this way loses its index, not its footage.

Signs your clip was cut off

  • The camera's playback skips it or shows an error.
  • The file has a normal size, but the computer shows 0:00 or won't open it.
  • It's the last clip recorded before the battery died or the camera switched off.

Loop recording makes a difference. A camera in loop mode writes short segments, so only the segment open at the moment of the cut is damaged; the ones before it play.

Repair it

  1. Copy the broken clip and one clip that plays, recorded with the same resolution, frame rate and stabilisation setting, to your computer.
  2. Open the broken clip in the checker on this page. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  3. If the checker asks for a sample, give it the clip that plays. Many clips need none.
  4. Watch the free 15-second preview of your own footage.
  5. Download the full video for $4.99, or with a plan. If it doesn't play, write to support@nasrtech.dev and we'll look at it with you.

Tested cameras

CameraResult after removing the index and repairing
GoPro HERO5, 6, 7, 8, 10, MAXEvery picture and sound frame identical
RunCamEvery frame identical
DJI Avata (4K60)All 364 of 364 pictures, in order

GoPro and DJI each took a change to the engine in October 2026. GoPro writes a small record before every sample, which kept the sound from coming back: a HERO5 file had returned 1 sound frame of 1,620 before the 9 October fix. DJI stores metadata between its pictures, and a DJI Avata file had returned 5 pictures of 364 before the 10 October fix. Other brands we haven't tested; the free check tells you whether yours works before you pay. For GoPro, see our GoPro page.

What isn't covered

Insta360's 360° .insv files hold two fisheye streams for Insta360 Studio. We haven't tested them, and Studio may not accept a repaired file. Single-lens MP4 files from an Insta360 Go are ordinary MP4.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

My camera saved a .LRV or .THM file next to the clip. Do I need it?

No. Those are a low-resolution preview and a thumbnail. Repair the main MP4.

Does the repair keep stabilisation and colour settings?

Everything the camera baked into the picture stays, because the repair re-encodes nothing.

Can I repair clips on my phone?

Yes, with the Video Repair app for Android, which uses the same engine.
