Canon camera video corrupted? Repair the MP4 or MOV

Canon's EOS R and newer EOS cameras record MP4; older EOS DSLRs record MOV, both with H.264 or H.265 video. A clip cut off by a dead battery, a full card or a card pulled out mid-shot ends up without the index the camera writes when you press stop. The footage is usually still there, and the camera simply can't find it.

Repair the clip

  1. Copy the broken clip from the card's DCIM folder to your computer, and copy one clip that plays, recorded on the same camera at the same resolution, frame rate and compression (IPB or ALL-I).
  2. Open the broken clip in the checker on this page. It runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
  3. If it asks for a clip, give it the one that plays. It reads that clip's settings, nothing else.
  4. Watch the free 15-second preview of your footage.
  5. Download the full video for $4.99, or with a plan. If it doesn't play, write to support@nasrtech.dev and we'll look at it with you.

What we know and what we don't

We haven't tested a Canon file yet, so we won't claim a result for one. What we have proven: GoPro, DJI, RunCam, 70mai, Tesla and Samsung recordings, H.264 and H.265, came back frame for frame, pictures and AAC sound, when we removed their index and repaired them. A Canon MP4 or MOV is the same kind of file. Canon cameras often record LPCM sound in MOV, which we haven't proven yet: the free preview tells you whether your sound came back before you pay.

The engine, in dates

  • 1 September 2026: a sample clip that is damaged too no longer stops the repair.
  • 10 October 2026: the engine learns to step over camera metadata stored between pictures, after a DJI file returned 5 pictures of 364. It now returns all 364.
  • 30 October 2026: many clips repair with no sample clip at all, when the recording proves its own settings.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

The camera shows the clip but says it can't play it. Same problem?

Usually. The camera lists the file from the card but can't read a clip without an index. Copy it off and check it.

Does ALL-I or IPB matter?

It matters for the sample clip: record it with the same setting as the broken one.

Is the repaired clip re-encoded?

No. The frames are the camera's own, byte for byte.
