Where the broken clip is
| Recorder | Default folder | File |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA (ShadowPlay, NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience) | Videos\<game name> | MP4 |
| Xbox Game Bar | Videos\Captures | MP4 |
| AMD Software (ReLive) | Videos\Radeon ReLive or the folder set in AMD Software | MP4 |
Instant Replay clips are written only when you press the save shortcut, so a crash with nothing saved leaves no file. A manual recording that was running leaves a file of its size so far.
Repair it
- Copy the broken clip somewhere safe.
- Open it in the checker on this page, or in the Video Repair program for Windows. Neither uploads the file.
- The free check tells you whether it found the video and sound.
- If it asks for a sample, record 10 seconds with the same recorder, resolution, frame rate and codec (H.264 or HEVC) and give it that clip. It reads the settings and copies nothing.
- Watch the free preview, then save the full video. If it doesn't play, write to support@nasrtech.dev and we'll look at it with you.
Long sessions make large files. The checker reads them on your computer, so the file size doesn't affect an upload, because there isn't one.
What we can claim
We haven't tested a clip from NVIDIA's, Microsoft's or AMD's recorder yet. Their files are H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound in MP4, the kind the engine has been proven on frame by frame, and the free check is the test for yours. For OBS, see OBS recording corrupted.
Avoid it next time
- In OBS, record to MKV or Hybrid MP4, which survive a crash. NVIDIA's recorder and Game Bar save MP4 only.
- Keep manual recordings short when a game is unstable, so a crash costs less.
