Windows video repair

Repair corrupted video files on Windows 10 and 11

Windows' own player gives you an error code, 0xc00d36c4 or 0xc10100be, and no way to fix the file. If the video fails in VLC too, the file is broken, usually because the recording or a copy stopped before it finished. You can repair it on Windows in two ways: the Video Repair program from the Microsoft Store, or the checker on this page in your browser.

Repair a video in the Windows program

  1. Get Video Repair from the Microsoft Store and open it.
  2. Drag the broken video onto the window, or press Ctrl+O. It tells you in plain words what happened to the file.
  3. Watch the repaired video free.
  4. Save it for $3.99, or with a plan. The licence key arrives in your receipt email.

How the Windows program got here

  • 25 September 2026: the first build, on the Android app's engine, repairs a Galaxy A56 clip with every picture and sound frame identical.
  • 16 October (1.0.2): AVI repair fixed, and a playable copy for files Windows can't play because of their format, such as MKV or WebM.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows have a built-in video repair tool?

No. The Films & TV app and Media Player only report error codes. Chkdsk repairs the disk, not the video inside a file.

Do I need the HEVC extension?

To play H.265 video in Windows' own player, yes; it's in the Microsoft Store. The repair doesn't need it.

Is my video sent anywhere?

No. The program repairs on your PC, and the browser checker reads the file locally.
